About Red Hemlock
What is the difference between red and dark hemlock? In a word, the color. Red hemlock has been off the tree less time and is "fresher". Dark hemlock is the same bark, stored in a pile and allowed to get hot; the heat "cooks" the bark and makes it darker. Hemlock is the premium bark: it has fewer slivers (some call it sliver-less) and browns as it ages.
Hemlock contains little to no slivers, so it is perfect for the avid gardener and families with small children. Use it as a decorative ground cover to give your landscape a finished look. Spread 2 to 3 inches deep, it helps hold moisture in hot months, protects plants through cold winters and keeps the weeds down. It is high in natural oils and has been found to repel ants and other insects while fresh. The Bark Place buys all its bark directly from the saw mill. When you order hemlock from us, it is hemlock. Guaranteed!
Red hemlock is available most of the year, except the hot months (July to mid-September): trees loosen their bark to grow, so it falls off in the forest and never reaches the mill.
